Samsung develops smarter and brighter LCDs

Mobile phone users may not need to squint at their mobile phone screens anymore. Samsung claims it has developed a new display chip that makes LCDs brighter in daylight. The chips can also lower the brightness when the screens are indoors, which can save battery life by up to 30%.

Samsung's mobile display driver integrated chip changes the light output depending on the brightness of the ambient light. The light is detected by a photosensor which divides the light into 32 levels. An image enhancement algorithm then matches the outputted light to the ambient light.
