Week Before Christmas Spark In Online Sales

Port Washington (NY) - Procrastinating shoppers pushed last week's e-tailer sales up 25% over the same period last year, a new record for the last-minute shopping time.

According to Internet tracker Comscore, December 16 to December 22 cemented this year as far and away the biggest ever for online holiday shopping.

Comscore also noted that December 10, the second Monday in December, was the biggest single day for Web store spending. That day alone, US shoppers spent $881 million, a 33% spike over the second Monday in December 2006.

Cyber Monday, the first Monday after Thanksgiving, was right behind with $733 million. That day is considered the beginning of the online holiday shopping season.

By the time all the numbers are in, Comscore says it expects the entire holiday sales online to total around $29.5 billion. That would be a 20% increase over last year.
