ECS Debuts its First AMD Kabini Motherboard

ECS has revealed a new Mini-ITX motherboard, the KBN-I. The unit is the world's first motherboard with the Kabini quad-core SoC. This integrates an AMD A6-5200 APU with the Radeon HD 8400 graphics part. The central processing unit runs at a speed of 2.0 GHz. The combination of these two parts yield a TDP of just 25 W.

ECS advertises the board to be up to 25 percent more power efficient. This is compared to current generation low-power platforms. The Kabini chip with the 28 nm Jaguar architecture has a higher IPC and can reduce its energy efficiency dramatically through reducing clock speeds when not taxed with larger loads.

The company gave no word on when the KBN-I/5200 board would be available through retail channels, nor did it release any information on pricing.

That's nice, but I wouldn't touch an ECS product with a 100' pole.

I'd like to use a Kabini board, preferably with an A4-5000, to build a computer for my grandmother. Does anyone have any idea when these will actually go on sale? I keep seeing reveals of various motherboards by different companies featuring Kabini chips, but can't find any info on when consumers will actually be able to purchase any of them.

I think you meant reduce energy consumption...
