While 1Gbit DDR2 chips are still available in very limited quantities in the open market, 2 GB DDR2 desktop modules may not go mainstream until 2008, according to industry sources. Memory module houses currently put more focus on 2x1 GB dual-channel solutions, which consist of two identical 1 GB modules, typically using 512Mbit (64x8) chips, offering them at lower prices than "pure" 2 GB modules utilizing 1Gbit (128x8) parts, with the price gap exceeding 50% in some cases.
